Hefted Sheep

Posted by
Christine (Ellemford, United Kingdom) on 16 July 2010 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

Hefted or heafed means that the sheep live on their own part of the moor and do not need fences. Their homing instinct is the result of centuries of evolution. In the background is controlled burning of heather which kills of a beetle that destroys the heather.

I'm very much an amateur photographer. I live in the hills of the Scottish Borders which has fantastic flora and fauna, as well as wonderful light.

The sheep and the burning heather is the perfect image of these hills. Great photo!

A great natural shot. Your sheep look more respectable than the tatty example that I caught.
